Sheriff Stewart (D-Doña Ana County) is a woman of so many firsts, one of which is being the first out lesbian as a sheriff. Her campaign was one based on her expertise and fresh perspective on policing— community policing— rather than political rhetoric. She’s been vocal about addressing racial discrimination in the past and has shown she’s willing to shift to a community-informed instead of the traditional, paternalistic approach. We’re excited about how she plans to help Doña Ana County!
